What Is String Tension?

String tension is the force applied when strings are woven onto the racket frame, measured in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg). Most badminton rackets are strung between 18–32 lbs. Tension is the single most impactful adjustable factor in your racket setup.

Low Tension (18–22 lbs / 8–10 kg)

Power is increased due to a catapult effect. Control is reduced. The sweet spot is larger and more forgiving. Durability increases because there's less stress on strings. Feel is softer with less vibration transfer.
Best for beginners who haven't developed consistent swing technique.

Medium Tension (22–26 lbs / 10–11.8 kg)

Power and control are balanced. The sweet spot is medium-sized. This is the most common range for intermediate club players.

High Tension (26–30+ lbs / 11.8–13.6+ kg)

Control increases with pinpoint accuracy. Power is reduced — requires strong technique. The sweet spot shrinks. Durability decreases — strings snap more easily. Feel is firm with maximum feedback.
Used by advanced and professional players who generate power through technique alone.

Tension by Player Level

Beginner: 18–22 lbs.
Intermediate: 22–26 lbs.
Advanced: 26–30 lbs.
Professional: 30+ lbs.
A simple test: hit clears from the back of the court without overexerting. If the shuttle falls short of the doubles long service line, lower your tension. If it lands deep easily, you can handle higher tension.

Tension and Gauge

Thinner strings (0.61–0.65mm) should be strung at slightly lower tension to prevent snap. Thicker strings (0.68–0.70mm+) can handle higher tensions and hold tension better.

When to Restring

Restring as many times per year as you play per week. If your string sounds duller or feedback decreases, it's time to restring.
